Do the books The Giver and Gathering Blue have to do with each other at all?
I think that's what the 2nd book is called. There's The Giver, Gathering Blue? And The Messenger. It says they are supposed to be books that go along with each other. I know one of the characters from #2 is in #3, but how is the Giver realated to them?
I think I remember reading that while The Giver really doesn't have much to do with Gathering Blue, they are meant to be companion novels; they portray the same time period (about 60 years in the future), but opposite societies. In The Giver, technology has advanced and is at the center of the society; in Gathering Blue, technology has diminished and the people live very simply. According to Wikipedia, The Giver is meant to show a utopian future, while Gathering Blue is meant to show a dystopian one.
Also, at the end of Gathering Blue, a boy similar to the main character of The Giver is mentioned. Lois Lowry said in an interview that the boy may be Jonas (from The Giver), or he may not be - it's up to the readers.
And according to Wikipedia (again), characters from both The Giver and Gathering Blue are in Messenger.
