For a general point, (x, y) on the parabola y = 4 - x^2, the area of the inscribed rectangle would have an area of:
A = 2x * (4 - x^2) = 8x - 2x^3
To find the maximum area, solve A' = 0 for x.
A' = 8 - 6x^2
8 - 6x^2 = 0
8 = 6x^2
8/6 = x^2
4/3 = x^2
x = sqrt(4/3) = 2 / sqrt(3)
The area is then:

*SORRY...I didn't see the part about the 1st quadrant. This is the rectangle of largest area in both 1st and 2nd quadrants. Follow the same procedure, however, but the area would only equal: A = x * (4 - x^2) = 4x - x^3
Solve A' = 0 for x:
A' = 4 - 3x^2
4 - 3x^2 = 0
4 = 3x^2
4/3 = x^2
x = 2/sqrt(3)
The same x-value as before, but the area will only be:
2/sqrt(3) * (4 - 4/3)
= 2/sqrt(3) * 8/3
