Which Little Mermaid version is better? Andersen's or Disney's?
For me, I pick Andersen's original tale. It was tragic yes, but it was deep and moving to me. The mermaid wanted to marry the prince because she loved, but also she wanted to gain an immortal soul (mermaids didn't have souls and only live to be 300 and die by turning into foam). And in a way, it had a slightly somewhat feminist tone (if you can call it that). And when the Prince (whose really a jerk) married another woman, the mermaid had to kill him in order for her not to die and return to her family, but she couldn't. She through herself into the sea and dissolved into foam, but she was turned into a spirit for a time being, if she did good deeds and children were good, she would ascend to heaven. If kids were bad and cried, she would spend another year on earth.
Harsh I know, but what do you expect from fairy tales?
Anderson all the way. There are several versions of the Anderson tale. Some have the prince still alive and married to another with the mermaid basically committing suicide.
Fairy tales weren't the Disney versions people always thought they were. Every read anything by the Grimm Brothers? Yikes. But, for me, I like it. Folk tales are often naturally dark.
