to all graphic designers, what tips can you give me to make a recipe booklet!
?im using adobe indesign to create a recipe book as part of a school assignment. the objective is to show that you know how to use the program well and that you can come up with creative ideas for the name, logo and overall design.
does anyone know any podcasts out there that will help or just really good sites. or even better i would love some tips from you graphic designers.
i downloaded the photoshop tv podcasts, you know the team of those 3 boys who talk about anything new in photoshop and give you tips but i found it to be a tad useless since 90% of the podcast was them talking about crap, picking on each other and lame jokes. im sorry if you read this the photoshop team haha

First of, Indesign is a page layout program, perfect for what you are doing. I will assume that you understand the basics of the program?

The rest of what you are doing is basically information design. You are gathering information and displaying it in the most usable way for the viewer. Not all recipe books/manuals/instruction do this well, but those that do are the best examples of information architecture.
The success of a good recipe book is to tell a person how to make something in the most simple, pleasing, and effective way. This requires proper layout hierarchy, text, and sometimes images. If you are unfamiliar with "Information design" and "information architecture" those two terms are something you should research.
My best advice to you is to go to your local library or book store and brows the design section. What you are looking for is a design layout book. There are many kinds of books like this, they are very simple, they basically have different types of page layouts which are optimal for various situations. (i like the Graphic Design Cookbook http://www.amazon.com/Graphic-Design-Cookbook-Recipes-Layouts/dp/0811831809/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1238761265&sr=1-15 looks like you can get it for $2.93 on Amazon - but you don't need to buy it, just bring a notepad with you to the library or bookstore) Another great source of displayed information are magazines and manuals (or how to books)
What you want to do is study what others have done and what is successful. You are then taking parts of other peoples successes and utilizing it to suit your needs. The way the material is presented in your recipe book will far outweigh the name and logo, let those come to you as you put together everything. Also think aobut a theme, do your recipes have anything in common? Is there something that ties everything together? Let the theme tie everything together (name, logo, color scheme, images)
