i have this old antique desk, it smells of mildew!?
This desk is 100 years old... and neve smelt bad before... until it was washed with SOAP and water, The water must have been trapped in the leaf... or something and NOW it smells of Mildew! I tried spraying the surface with WAX.
I tried to spray A few coats of laquer now i am wondering if i should try to use an OIL based Varathane on it? WHat would you suggest to get rid of the smell??? (is the varathan a good idea to put ontop of the Laquer?)

The customer washed the piece with WATER? and proably didn't allow it to dry? The LEaf was closed in.. and trapped the moisture..... laquer allows the wood to breath... more so than Urethane... however since laquer allows to breath... it also absorbs... and mould smell is terrible! I don't want to use Urethane on top of Laquer... but it had worked on another piece.. i was just worried about the piece splitting.... (not allowing the wood to breath)
You didn't allow the wood to dry properly and now you have sealed it in with the wax and lacquer. Call around for estimates from furniture restorers that specialize in antique furniture. Please be sure you are dealing with reputable ones though. Let the professional tackle this. It is not as costly as you might think.
(If you live in a sunny area, you could try laying the pieces outdoors in the sun, it is a natural bleaching process. Lightly sand the pieces being careful not to sand into the original finish and then lay them outdoors. May take several days, depending on the strength of the sun.) Good luck.
