I need help with a history question, please help?
Ok, so here is the question, which is doing my head in, so please help.
Thomas Carlyle maintained that history was the "biography of great men." Some politicians and educationalists have suggested that history taught in schools should focus on the 'heroes' of British History. Examine the possible advantages and disadvantages of this proposal.
i've got the obvious, eg- disadvantage, we would be ignoring great heroes from different countries, this should not been done as we should not just focus on people from the Uk as it is important to learn about different cultures.
1) the definition of 'heroes' is ambigious
2) history is written by the winners of conflicts
3) history is being 'spinned' by the powers that be
4) a common heroic interpretation of UK history can be used to strenghten nowadays cultural ties and help to bond citizens to a common cause
5) every nation has behaved like psychopatic arseholes to survive
6) (for good grades:) always include that the UK (British Empire, whatever) was AND is, in the end, superior to ALL other cultures because of (at least) 3 good reasons;
fr instance: the British came to envoke British Law (all old colonies still wear silly wigs in court), the British Military principles were superior (they STILL wear shorts all over the Commonwealth Armies) and without Britain in the WWII, the whole of Europe would still speak German (which is true, btw)
